Recruiting is reactionary.  There is an opening with 5 “Must Have” requirements and the hiring manager’s sole focus is finding those requirements to fill the job.  This process often hurts companies in the long term, as hiring is not approached in a way that builds the bench strength that is needed down the road.  The recruiting function needs to take a bigger role in understanding and anticipating the future needs of the business so they can then help to make sure hiring is not short sighted.  Here is a great article that sheds some light on how mistakes are being made in recruiting and how the recruiting function can be better strategically utilized in the future.
